Frelimo in Maputo City has accused PODEMOS of having resorted to ballot box stuffing to win the October 9 elections, but in vain, because victory went to the ruling party and its candidate, with almost 58% and 53% of the vote respectively.
Frelimo in Maputo City called the press this Thursday (17-10) to proclaim itself the winner of the general elections in the country’s capital. “Frelimo, in this electoral process in Maputo City, had over 53 percent for its candidate Daniel Francisco Chapo and, for Frelimo, also in round numbers, around 57 or 58%,” revealed the first secretary of Frelimo in Maputo City, António Niquice.
“We have seen many ballot box stuffing processes in favour of other parties,” Niquice said when asked by journalists about ballot box stuffing in favour of Frelimo.
“We want to believe that there was manipulation of public opinion in this process. We, in Maputo City, had the opportunity to see that some opposition tried to manipulate this information to give the indication that Frelimo was involved in this process. This stuffing process, the videos that are available reveal that PODEMOS was doing this. We are not going to get into that debate, because it is up to the electoral bodies and the bodies that regulated the process.”
Furthermore, this year’s election process was, according to António Niquice, one of the best organised since Mozambique began holding elections.
“These elections are quite important, because it is the first time that, on national soil, we have elections with all the parties unarmed, and that was what we saw, in general, characterised by a peaceful atmosphere. We believe that these elections were the most transparent and fair elections, in recent times,” he concluded.
Of the almost 700,000 voters registered for the City of Maputo, around 250,000 did not vote.
