Renamo’s former candidate for the October elections in Maputo Venâncio Mndlane will be the campaign spokesman for the party’s current candidate, Hermínio Morais, his mission is to project the image of the major general in the reserve.
In the run-up to the municipal elections in the Mozambican capital, Renamo, the country’s largest opposition party, has the hard task of projecting the politically unknown Hermínio Morais. But, after being banned from the electoral race, Venancio Mondlane is now the man chosen by Renamo as party spokesman.
Venâncio Mondlane explained to DW that this cooperation has come about in the scope of work that was already being done. “As those who accompanied the pre-campaign will know, we are working together, we are planning together. The manifesto itself is the result of a joint effort, which will continue until the end of the campaign and the day of victory,” he said.
Mondlane is aware that it is “an important part of Renamo’s success”. “The party gave me a specific function, as it did General Hermínio Morais. Together, we will make Renamo the alternative for Maputo”.
Hermínio Morais, a resident of the historic neighbourhood of Mafalala, is a man of few words and tells DW that he trusts Venâncio Mondlane’s rhetoric to project his image. “The advice of Venâncio Mondlane is very important, because he has a vast experience in the political area in this city. Expectations are high that we will win the city of Maputo,” he says.
What projects?
Mondlane has already laid out his plans for the largest municipality in Mozambique. Among them are the construction of the “first multifunctional gallery for various arts”. But there is more: “We will build, for the first time, municipal maternal and child health clinics in all neighbourhoods. Regarding Hulene, our plan is to convert the garbage there into luxury: to look at garbage as raw material, as a source of wealth, a source of income.”
Always at Mondlane’s side, Morais appeals for an orderly campaign and promises victory in Maputo. “We are calling on all citizens to be orderly. Let’s make this campaign a celebration, a moment of fraternisation in which Mozambicans have the opportunity to reflect and opt for change in this city of Maputo.”
The National Electoral Commission estimates it will spend just over ten million Euros on this year’s municipal elections and the general elections of 2019.
