Quelimane has been experiencing a day of clashes between local residents and police forces, in a demonstration of latent tension that culminated in the use of tear gas and gunfire by the authorities.
It all started this morning, when the mayor, Manuel de Araújo, was returning from an official trip abroad. Usually, the people of Quelimane head to the airport to greet the mayor, but this time, the police blocked all access to the location, making it impossible for residents to approach.
According to witnesses, without prior warning or justification, the police forces began an attack with tear gas and gunfire.

Quelimane, vive um dia de confrontos entre populares e forças policiais, numa demonstração de tensão latente que culminou com o uso de gás lacrimogêneo e disparos de armas de fogo por parte das autoridades.
Tudo começou nesta manhã, quando o presidente do município, Manuel de Araújo, retornava de uma viagem oficial ao exterior. Habitualmente, a população de Quelimane dirige-se ao aeroporto para saudar o edil, mas, desta vez, a polícia bloqueou todos os acessos ao local, impossibilitando a aproximação dos munícipes.
De acordo com testemunhas, sem aviso prévio ou justificativa, as forças policiais iniciaram um ataque com gás lacrimogêneo e disparos.
