The Technical Secretariat of Electoral Administration (STAE) in the province of Maputo last Tuesday (16-01) incinerated electoral material used in the sixth local elections on October 11th, Noticias reports.
The incinerated material consists of “[cast] voting ballots which were validly expressed, claimed, protested and counter-protested, during the poll process, as well as the material which remained, all referring to the area of jurisdiction of the municipality of the city of Matola”.
On the occasion, the president of the Matola City Elections Commission (CEC), Carolina Cumbane, explained that, after the validation and proclamation of the electoral results of the sixth local elections, the destruction of the material – which marks the end of the electoral process – is prescribed by law.
Regarding incineration in other municipalities in Maputo province, Cumbane said a note from the National Elections Commission (CNE) specified last Wednesday (17-01) as the last day for carrying out the activity.
“We understand that municipalities throughout the country are carrying out the same act and, certainly, at the end of the day, we will see through the media how things went,” Cumbane said.
