The Frelimo party and its presidential candidate, Filipe Nyusi, won the elections in Sofala province, where just over half of the registered voters went to the polls, according to the results released yesterday in Beira by the Provincial Elections Commission (CPE), the National Elections Commission [CNE9 at the level of Sofala province,
Sofala’s CPE convened the press on Saturday evening to publicly present the interim results of this region of the country.
The event had first been scheduled for 6 p.m. in one of the hotels in the city of Beira. However, until about 8 p.m., the president of the Provincial Election Commission had not arrived at the scene. The room where the results release ceremony was due to take place was full of Frelimo members. At around 8h15m p.m., a senior Frelimo member asked all those from his party who were wearing party-inspired regalia to leave the room, claiming that the law does not allow it. Disagreeing with the situation, they left the room, but were waiting outside excitedly, as everything indicated a clear victory for Frelimo.
At about 9 p.m., the president of the Provincial Election Commission finally arrived announcing that, in Sofala, one million and twenty-nine thousand voters had been registered and that, of these, about 594 thousand had voted on the 15th October.
Let’s go to the votes obtained by each candidate:
In the presidential elections:
Filipe Nyusi obtained 377,902, corresponding to 67, 78 percent of the vote;
Ossufo Momade had 111,925, corresponding to 20.08 percent;
Daviz Simango had 65,066, corresponding to 11.67 percent; and
Mario Albino amounted to 2,612, corresponding to 0.47 percent.
In the voting for the election of Deputies to the Assembly of the Republic:
The CPE minutes indicate that Frelimo was in first place, Renamo in second and MDM occupies the third position.
In the provincial elections:
Frelimo also won in all districts of Sofala province, including Beira.
The remaining political formations that competed for the elections for Parliament, the Assembly of the Republic, and for the Provincial Assembly of Sofala did not get enough votes to reach the one per cent threshold.
