The National Resistance of Mozambique (Renamo), the main opposition force, announced today that it is preparing to release the results of the parallel count of the general elections, in which it declared itself the winner in two provinces.
“In the coming days, the Renamo party will make a statement and will release the results of its parallel count regarding what the results of these elections are,” declared the party’s election representative (mandatário) Geraldo Carvalho, at a press conference in Maputo.
Carvalho said that, after the release of the election results by the National Electoral Commission (CNE), which still need to be validated by the Constitutional Council (CC), Renamo “remained calm” while working on the data from the parallel count, recalling that it is not “in favour of the results released” by official bodies.
“I would like to say that in two provinces Renamo is said to have the advantage in terms of the election of provincial governors and provincial assemblies,” Carvalho said, adding that Renamo is awaiting the decision of the CC.
“We hope that this time the Constitutional Council will do its job properly, remembering its obligations,” said the Renamo mandatário.

On Thursday, the CNE of Mozambique announced the victory of Daniel Chapo, supported by the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo, the party in power since 1975) in the election for President of the Republic on October 9, with 70.67% of the votes.
Venâncio Mondlane, supported by the Optimist Party for the Development of Mozambique (Podemos, an extra-parliamentary party), came in second place, with 20.32%, but said he did not recognize these results, which still have to be validated and proclaimed by the Constitutional Council.
Frelimo also strengthened its parliamentary majority, increasing its number of seats from 184 to 195 (out of 250), and elected all 10 provincial governors in the country.
In addition to Mondlane, another of the four presidential candidates, Ossufo Momade, the president of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo, currently the largest opposition party), has said that he does not recognize the election results announced by the CNE and has called for the vote to be annulled.
Presidential candidate Lutero Simango, supported by the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), also rejected the results, considering that they were “forged in the secretariat”, and promised “political and legal action” to restore the “popular will”.
Yesterday, Wednesday, the CC gave the National Elections Commission a deadline of eight days to send to this body the minutes and notices of the partial count, carried out at the polling stations, and the same documentation made by the district commissions, in the city of Maputo, as well as in the provinces of Maputo, Gaza, Inhambane, Tete, Zambézia and Nampula.
