The Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo, the country’s largest opposition party) has appointed Marcial Macome party spokesperson, replacing José Manteigas, who becomes president of the national council.
“Marcial Macome takes over the important role of head of information and spokesperson for the party. (…) [Renamo] celebrates the appointment of new staff to strategic positions, aiming to boost the path towards victory in the October elections,” a statement on the party’s Facebook page reads.
Renamo says the appointment of new staff reflects the search for dynamism and efficiency in preparing for the general elections on October 9, in addition to demonstrating confidence in the capacity and commitment of those appointed.
Among other appointments, Renamo now has Geraldo Carvalho as head of the national mobilisation department, Ezequiel Gusse as head of the national training and strategic studies department, in addition to reappointing some members to their existing functions.
Former spokesman José Manteigas becomes chairman of the Renamo national council.
“The reappointment of other cadres in key positions reinforces the continuity and stability necessary to achieve the party’s objectives,” Renamo says, reaffirming its commitment to “internal renewal and strengthening” at a time when the leadership of the party is facing scrutiny.
Ossufo Momade has been criticised for alleged inertia in the face of perceived irregularities in the Mozambican local elections in October, and has also been accused of negligence regarding the situation of the party’s guerrillas demobilised in light of the peace agreement with the government.
Mozambique will hold general elections on October 9th, which include, in addition to legislative and provincial elections, presidential elections, in which current president Filipe Nyusi can no longer compete, having reached the constitutional two-term limit.
