The presidential candidate of the Democratic Alliance Coalition (CAD), Venâncio Mondlane, concluded his five-day visit to Portugal yesterday, a crucial stage in a European journey to strengthen international partnerships and diplomacy. According to a press release posted by the candidate on his Facebook page, “the visit culminated in a very important meeting with President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa”.
According to the same source, the meeting took place in a restaurant close to the president’s official residence and “was marked by a pleasant treatment, reflecting the simplicity and accessibility that characterise the Portuguese leader”.
“President Rebelo de Sousa demonstrated a genuine interest in my political and civic career as well as in the causes we defend. We addressed critical social issues in Mozambique, such as poverty and social inequalities, education and health,” Mondlane reported.
President Marcelo, known for his commitment to democracy and human rights, listened carefully to Mondlane’s concerns about the political situation in Mozambique, especially with regard to the ongoing electoral process and rights violations by the National Elections Commission (CNE).
“We discussed the electoral process in Mozambique and I appealed to President Marcelo that Portugal not remain neutral, but that it be an active voice in defence of human rights and political participation. We respect the limits of sovereignty, but it is crucial that we have respect for the law and human rights,” Mondlane highlighted.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, known for his diplomatic style and ability to promote dialogue, was understanding and sensitive to the challenges faced by Mozambique. The meeting reinforced the bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two countries, reflecting the commitment of both leaders to democratic values.
Venâncio Mondlane’s visit to Portugal was just the beginning of a series of international efforts aimed at repositioning Mozambique on the global stage. After saying goodbye to President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Mondlane left for Germany, where he will continue his work of establishing partnerships and promoting diplomacy between nations that value democracy and the rights of the people.
“We are on a crusade across Europe and the world, to strengthen our fight for democracy. This is just the first step in a campaign that will expand to other continents,” Mondlane said.
The meeting with President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa marked a significant moment for Venâncio Mondlane’s pré-campaign, highlighting the importance of international alliances in defending democracy in Mozambique. The meeting signalled CAD’s commitment to fighting for the political rights and sovereignty of the Mozambican people, Mondlane said.
