The Mozambican police (PRM) warned on Friday that it will take coercive measures to prevent any “acts of violence, vandalism and public disorder”, that may occur in the coming days.
Addressing a press conference in Maputo (at which journalists were not allowed to ask any questions) the spokesperson for the PRM General Command, Orlando Mudumane, said that, as the result of last week’s general elections were gradually released, there had been a surge of “speeches to incite hatred, violence and generalised public disorder, strikes and illegal demonstrations such as those that occurred in Nampula on Wednesday”.
Mudumane was referring to the clashes in Nampula between the police and supporters of the independent presidential candidate, Venancio Mondlane. Each side blamed the other, and Mondlane said he had video coverage of the Nampula march which showed it was the police that started the violence.
Mudumane’s main concern was the general strike that Mondlane has called for next Monday, throughout the country in protest at what he regards as fraudulent election results.
Despite the strike call, Mudumane insisted that working activities will take place normally on Monday. The defence and security forces, he said, would take all measures to prevent the occurrence of acts of violence.
He called for the public to collaborate with the police and to denounce “any gathering of strange individuals of doubtful behavior in the main squares and avenues”.
All stakeholders in the elections, he added, should “conform scrupulously with the law and respect State institutions”.
The police and the other defence and security forces would take measures “to prevent any acts that might disturb peace, order and public tranquility and ensure the free movement of people and goods”.
All activities will take place normally on Monday, he pledged, despite the calls for a strike.
