The Mozambican police told Lusa on Monday that they are still investigating the murder of two top aides of presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, which occurred exactly one month ago from yesterday in the city of Maputo.
“The investigations are still ongoing. Of course, whenever we have any pertinent information to share with the media, we will [do so],” Hilário Lole, spokesperson for the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) in Maputo, told Lusa.
“If we have not invited [the media] to share it, it is because we are still investigating and we do not have any information to share at this time,” Lole said.
Elvino Dias, lawyer for presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, and Paulo Guambe, election agent of the Optimist Party for the Development of Mozambique (Podemos), the party that supports Mondlane, were shot dead in an “ambush” on 18 October, Mozambican police announced at that time.
The crime took place on Joaquim Chissano Avenue, in the centre of the capital city, Maputo.
The double homicide and the announcement of the results of the general count by the National Electoral Commission led to a wave of violent protests across the country, especially in the capital, with clashes between demonstrators and police.
