Mozambique Elections: Podemos headquarters burned down in Manica - AIM
The Mozambican police killed, not one person, but at least seven in the protests that followed the announcement of the municipal election results which opposition parties regard as fraudulent.
The official police account, initially given by the spokesperson for the police General Command, and then repeated by Interior Minister Pascoal Ronda when he addressed the Mozambican parliament, the Assembly of the Republic, on Wednesday, is that just one person was killed during the protests, in the Chiure municipality, in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, on 26 October.
But investigations by the anti-corruption NGO, the Centre for Public Integrity (CIP), have turned up evidence of a further six deaths in the northern cities of Nampula and Nacala. The evidence is published in Friday’s issue of the CIP bulletin on the municipal elections.
Four people died in Nampula, and CIP located relatives of two of them. 27 year old Sabonete Saide was killed by a police bullet in his home. He was the father of two children, with his pregnant wife expecting a third. CIP published a photograph of Saide’s death certificate.
Another victim was 14 year-old Atipo Juma. This child was shot in the street where he was selling maheu, a non-alcoholic drink made from maize flour. After being shot, Atipo Juma was taken to Nampula Central Hospital, where he died. Juma Abdala, the boy’s father, went to the police station to protest, but was told only that he just had to go and bury his son.
In Nacala, CIP confirmed the deaths from police bullets of two young people. One was Issa Felix, a trader from the Juma market. He was shot dead at around 22.00 on 26 October while trying to cross the road with his friend, Issufo Momade Manuel.
“At dusk we went for a walk together, and as soon as we arrived at Ontupaia market, my friend wanted to cross the road, when he was shot dead,” said Manuel. The body remained on the road for some time without being removed, because others were afraid of being shot.
The following day, the police shot dead a 17 year old, named Braimo Arlindo, a plastic bag seller in Nacala. Braimo and his father were hiding in a house after the police had fired tear gas. The police chased them and found them in their hiding place. They shot the teenager dead in cold blood and seriously injured his father, who survived.
