Police in Mozambique on Friday dispersed hundreds of supporters of presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane who were demonstrating to contest the official election results, many of them kneeling and singing the national anthem in the centre of the capital, Maputo.
The police intervention took place at around 1.20 p.m. near the statue of Eduardo Mondlane (no relation), on Maputo’s central avenue of the same name, causing the demonstrators to flee momentarily.
Friday is the last day of three days of protests called by Venâncio Mondlane, who has said he does not accept the presidential election results announced by the National Electoral Commission (CNE).
The protests, Mondlane has said, is in mourning for the people killed – according to the candidate a total of 50 people have died in recent days – who took part in previous protest actions, “shot by the authorities who were supposed to protect them.”
The candidate, who was backed in last month’s election by the Optimistic Party for the Development of Mozambique (Podemos) disputes the attribution of victory to Daniel Chapo, the candidate supported by the governing Frelimo party, with 70.67% of the vote, according to the results announced on 24 October by the CNE and which have yet to be validated by the Constitutional Council.
