Anglican bishop Dinis Sengulane says “the end of violence, and dialogue and tolerance” are “urgent pillars for the restoration of peace” in the context of the post-election demonstrations taking place in the country.
The country is experiencing a critical moment, marked by deaths and the destruction of socio-economic infrastructure, resulting from the demonstrations that have been taking place since the announcement of the results of the October 9th elections.
In view of the situation, Bishop Dinis Sengulane warns of the need for an “urgent, national” reflection for the restoration of peace and harmony among Mozambicans.
“We have experience and [we have] many people willing to help and advise us. There are conditions for dialogue. Let us not wait one more day; this is not something for today, it’s for yesterday,” he said.
The Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Libombos believes that the life of every Mozambican must be valued and protected. In this journey, Bishop Sengulane lists three pillars, with the priority being the end of violence. “All types of violence, whether verbal, public or private, must end now,” the bishop says.
With the end of violence, there is room for dialogue, and with it the restoration of hope.
“Our young people need guidance. There are many young people expressing an attitude of despair, but there are conditions for there to be hope,” Sengulane concludes.
Dom Dinis Sengulane was speaking in Xai-Xai during celebrations of the fiftieth anniversary of his ordination.
