The “Nampulenses” abandoned Ossufo Momade and Renamo, who are no longer the second most voted-for in the province of Nampula, and also ignored Daniel Chapo, who was the most voted-for with only 504,000 votes of the 3.2 million registered in Mozambique’s largest constituency. Eduardo Abdula should be elected governor, but without an absolute majority.
The Nampula Provincial Electoral Commission announced this Monday (14) that 2,338,886 registered voters decided to ignore the 7th presidential and legislative elections and 4th elections of members of the provincial assemblies and of the provincial governor.
Only 927,996 voters chose Daniel Chapo as President of the Republic, winning 59.58 percent of those votes. Venâncio Mondlane was the second most voted-for candidate for Ponta Vermelha with 25.59 percent, Ossufo Momade only got 11.17 percent and Lutero Simango 3.67 percent.
A large part of the 48 deputies that the Province of Nampula elects to the Assembly of the Republic will go to the Frelimo party, which obtained 57.93 percent of the votes. Other mandates should be divided between Podemos, which won 19.04 percent, Renamo, 12.96 percent, and the MDM, which obtained only 3.81 percent.
The Frelimo party did not obtain the majority of mandates in the provincial assembly, obtaining 49.10 percent, but should be able to elect Eduardo Abdula as the new governor. Podemos is the second largest provincial force with 32.96 percent of the votes, followed by Renamo with 9.33 percent and the MDM with 3.23 percent.
