In a meeting with President of the Republic Filipe Nyusi in Maputo this morning, the Muslim Community in Mozambique asked the government and Frelimo to engage in more dialogue with the people in order to prevent tensions from escalating.
“We would like Frelimo to change its behaviour and engage in more dialogue with the people. There is a serious lack of dialogue between our leaders and the Mozambican people,” said Muslim community representative Nazir Loonat.
On the other hand, the religious community is asking the Constitutional Council to be more flexible in announcing the results of the October 9 general elections.
“The Constitutional Council must hurry up to declare the election results – it must look at the complaints in order to resolve the existing problem in the country. The Constitutional Council must have the evidence to say that this or that person won the elections, without favouring anyone. Justice must prevail,” Loonat said.
At the meeting, President Nyusi expressed regret at the deaths of civilians and police officers, as well as the destruction of infrastructure such as party headquarters, electoral institutions and vehicles belonging to individuals and legal entities, both private and public.
In turn, Minister of the Interior Pascoal Ronda, called upon by the President of the Republic to provide context to the current situation, revealed that, after being blockaded yesterday, the town of Bobole, in Maputo province, had now been relieved. Other areas of Maputo province are, however, now being blockaded, Minister Ronda revealed.
“Today, Maputo province is blocked, but work is being done to remove these obstacles and Mr. Venâncio is not here, he is outside the country and, from wherever he is, he is sending messages, sending invitations for people to take part in events like these. More aware people do not adhere to this. But less aware people, especially young people who drink alcoholic beverages, not the best ones, who consume narcotics and appear as abnormal people, they are induced to commit these acts,” the Minister of the Interior said.
Ronda acknowledges that the current situation is not the best, but says that if the law were respected, the country could reach a safe haven.
“There are [legal] challenges that were filed and all of this is being worked on, but there are those who do not have the patience to listen or to know what the outcome will be. The government has been making a great effort, appealing to everyone for us to remain Mozambicans and to believe in the institutions. At the moment, the President of the Republic has been making all these contacts, in order to ascertain the people’s feelings, so that we can have peace in the country,” Minister Ronda said.
