The Renamo candidate to mayor in Matola municipality on Thursday claimed to have won the municipal elections in the city, while Augusto Pelembe, from the Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM), recognized defeat there and congratulated Renamo.
António Muchanga said that the partial count carried out by his party gave Renamo in Matola 55% of the vote with Frelimo in second place, with 33% of votes, and MDM in third place.
“We want to believe that these results will never change, because we won in almost all schools,” Muchanga said.
The leader of the Democratic Movement of Mozambique recognizes that he has not got far and acknowledges defeat. “We want to congratulate Renamo on winning the elections and we hope that they will solve the problems of the citizens,” Augusto Pelembe said.
Both MDM and Renamo have spoken about illegalities at some polling stations in Matola.
