The presidential candidate supported by the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), Lutero Simango, has said that the country has been poorly governed during the two terms of the current head of state, Filipe Nyusi, accusing him of being responsible for the social tensions in the country.
“When governance is poorly done, when governance does not meet the expectations of the population, when governance does not solve the basic problems of the population (….) we are experiencing strikes here, strikes there,” Simango, who also leads the third largest party in the country, says in an interview with Lusa.
Simango, who is a candidate to succeed Filipe Nyusi in the general elections of October 9, pointed out that the country is facing crises in health, where he says there is a lack of medicines, and in education, with overcrowded classes and discontent among teachers, situations that have led to strikes or threats of strikes in the public sector.
“This is the result of poor governance. This is the result of the government’s inability to meet the basic needs of the population,” he said.
The president of the MDM argued that the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo, the ruling party) has shown itself powerless to meet the needs of the Mozambican population since the country’s independence in 1975.
“The only way forward is to remove this party from power. That is why we talk about change. They have already done what they had to do. I often consider the ruling party, Frelimo, to be a product past its expiration date,” Lutero Simango stressed.
Mozambique, he continued, needs democratic change to find solutions that meet the country’s expectations. “We talk about change as a necessary condition for us to begin a whole process of reforming our state,” he said.
Mozambique will hold general elections on October 9, including presidential, legislative and provincial elections. The current President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, will not run in the election, having already reached the constitutional limit of two terms.
Also running for the position are Daniel Chapo, supported by Frelimo; Ossufo Momade, supported by the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo, the largest opposition party); and Venâncio Mondlane, who until last May was a member of parliament and a member of Renamo.
