Mozambique’s Minister of the Interior, Pascoal Ronda, yesterday accused presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane of inciting violence in Mozambique by “commanding” the “manipulation of public opinion” from South Africa.
“You know, we know, that Venâncio Mondlane is the mastermind behind these demonstrations. He is the one who is driving this. He is not here now, he is in South Africa, but from there he commands, he uses social media, something which we, as users of these social networks, should not allow, because it manipulates public opinion and causes destruction,” Ronda told journalists at the headquarters of the Ministry of the Interior in Maputo on Tuesday afternoon.
“There are many families who are crying over the harm that has been caused. People who are dragged into participating in this, but later on regret it. What do we gain from this? What [is it] for?” the minister asked.
Pascoal Ronda’s speech came about an hour before Venâncio Mondlane, who does not recognize the results of the general elections of October 9, called for a one-week general strike starting on Thursday (31-10), demonstrations at the district headquarters of the National Electoral Commission (CNE) and marches to Maputo on November 7.
“One week [from October 31 to November 7] is enough for us all to leave our districts, our villages, for Maputo,” Mondlane posted on his official Facebook page.
