The three main parties in Ilha de Moçambique, Frelimo, Renamo and MDM, reached an agreement Saturday 29 September about avoiding violence when party parades meet. The accord says that one party can use the space for two hours, but then has to leave to allow another party to use the location. The Ilha is crowded with few roads and caravans frequently meet and compete for the same space, sometimes violently.
On 28 September, the day before the meeting, police used tear gas to break up a confrontation between Frelimo and Renamo caravans.
Police commander Para Cesarito Rumia said the agreement was a relief and he hopes it will be implemented.
