Mozambique: Security forces to ensure order for economic independence - president
Daniel Francisco Chapo, Frelimo candidate for the October presidential elections, met representatives of religious denominations from Maputo city on Monday.
Chapo went to thank the religious groups for their “prayers” for Frelimo and to “ask for [their] blessing” for the upcoming electoral challenge. The different religious denominations welcomed Chapo, whom they called their united candidate. They asked God to bless Chapo and offered him an electronic bible to use throughout his journey.
The religious groups expressed their willingness to cooperate with the government, highlighting, for example, the need for collaboration in social assistance for the elderly. They also strongly condemned lynchings based on accusations of witchcraft.
Taking the floor, the First Secretary of the Maputo City Committee, António Niquice, said it was an honour to welcome his party’s presidential candidate. Niquice said that Daniel Francisco Chapo requested the meeting with the religious groups to thank them for the prayers and congratulations that he has been receiving from this group, as well as to ask for advice on accomplishing his mission.
For his part, the head of the Central Assistance and Support Brigade for the City of Maputo and Member of the Political Commission, Francisco Mucanheia, welcomed the availability of the religious people who timely agreed to meet the candidate.
Mucanheia said that Frelimo’s choice of Daniel Chapo was based on his long experience in governance and party activism.
Agreeing, Niquice said that Chapo’s work in the communities had left an indelible mark, and that “the Frelimo party is completely certain that God has chosen the best leader for Mozambicans – one who is righteous and hard-working”.
He said he was happy for the presence of the religious leaders, “which shows God’s strength, so that the future president Daniel Chapo can lead the country with a focus on the positive growth of the economy and society without any type of discrimination. This is the ideal candidate and the best president that Mozambique needs in this context”.
Daniel Chapo thanked the religious groups for their presence and said that, despite his full agenda, it was opportune to meet with them. He explained the choice of Quelimane to present the candidate, which was based on the fact that the Frelimo party had presented the candidates for mayor of the last local elections in Nampula and had opened the last electoral campaign in the City of Beira in Sofala.
He also recalled that, during his candidacy’s public presentation in Quelimane, Frelimo president Filipe Nyusi announced that he was now free to fly, that is, to start working and have meetings with different segments of society.
In this context, Daniel Chapo had decided, in coordination with the Maputo City Committee, to meet with religious groups to thank them and ask their advice, both he and the party being aware of the role of religion in building the country, as well as to thank them for their prayers during the three days in which the session of the Frelimo Central Committee that elected him took place.
He further explained that it was not possible to follow the tradition of presenting the candidate right after the election, due to the Frelimo president’s schedule as head of state.
