Daniel Chapo, interim Secretary General of Frelimo and that party’s presidential candidate in the upcoming elections, arrived in Dar es Salaam this Tuesday morning for a three-day working visit to Tanzania.
This is Daniel Chapo’s first visit abroad since he was elected as Frelimo’s candidate for the ‘Ponta Vermelha’.
In addition to the meeting with his party’s grassroots, Chapo is scheduled to visit the site in Dar es Salaam where, on June 25, 1962, three regionally based nationalist organizations – the Mozambican African National Union (MANU), National Democratic Union of Mozambique (UDENAMO), and the National African Union of Independent Mozambique (UNAMI) – merged to form the Liberation Front of Mozambique (FRELIMO).
Also on Chapo’s itinerary are visits to the graves of Eduardo Mondlane, Josina Mache and Francisco Manyanga, and to the house where Eduardo Mondlane lived.
The first secretary of Frelimo in mainland Tanzania, Costa Maiko Mwanga, said it was an honour for Tanzania to be the destination for Daniel Chapo’s first visit abroad as presidential candidate, and everything was set for a dignified reception.
