Augusta Maita, Frelimo head of list in Beira, remains in her post as permanent secretary for Sofala, the second most important post in the province, while she continues to campaign for mayor.
The Frelimo candidate has not suspended her duties but does not appear in her office until after 6:00 pm. Nevertheless, as a senior public official, Maita meets with officials and civil servants, giving her an obvious advantage.
Last Saturday, at a meeting led by Frelimo’s secretary general, Roque Silva, Augusta Maita met with civil servants, mostly teachers, to openly request a vote. The meeting took place at the Monte Verde complex, owned by the former speaker of the Sofala provincial assembly, Manuel Ramissane, better known as Nelinho. The press was barred. But health workers were taken to the party meeting in a Beira Central Hospital bus.
