Frelimo, the ruling party “expresses concern and repudiation of the threats to the physical integrity of our comrades and all Mozambicans, the vandalism of the party’s headquarters and other institutions, in the context of the violent demonstrations,” reads a statement seen by the Lusa news agency.
In the document, which takes stock of the 37th ordinary session of its Political Commission, which met on Wednesday and Thursday to analyse the current political situation in the country, Frelimo says that the demonstrations have turned into episodes of “violence, destruction and looting”, especially in the city of Maputo.
Frelimo says that it “recognizes the right to protest”, but condemns what it calls an attempt to subvert the democratic order and create obstacles to the functioning of state institutions and the private sector, with economic and social consequences.
The party also asks political parties and presidential candidates to respect the legislation in force in the country, appealing for “patience” until the results are announced by the Constitutional Council.
“There is no reason, under any circumstances, that justifies the loss of human lives or the destruction of what was arduously achieved by the Mozambican people,” the statement adds, calling specifically for an end to the participation of minors in protests.
