The only curiosity about the elections in Gaza Province is knowing how big the victory of the Frelimo party will be, but for now, judging by the results announced this Monday (14) by the Provincial Elections Commission, the “comrades” lost votes to abstention, to Podemos party and to Venâncio Mondlane.
Of the 1,198,262 Mozambicans registered to vote in the Gaza Electoral District, 595,922 abstained from exercising their civic right, an increase compared to the 424,498 who did not vote in 2019 out of the 1,166,011 registered.
Of the 602,340 who voted, 84.59 percent chose Daniel Chapo for President of the Republic, less than the 94.74 percent of votes that Filipe Nyusi obtained in the last election. In addition to losing votes to abstention, Chapo lost votes to Venâncio Mondlane, who won 11.47 percent of the votes. Lutero Simango obtained 2.33 percent, while Ossufo Momade got 1.61 percent.
The Frelimo party, with 87.40 percent of the votes, is expected to maintain the 18 seats that the province elects for the Assembly of the Republic, down from 93.53 percent in 2019. The 4.44 percent obtained by the Podemos party is unlikely to be enough to elect any deputies, just as Renamo’s 2.80 percent or MDM’s 2.12 percent will not be enough.
The best vote for the “comrades” was for the Gaza provincial assembly, where they won 87.69 percent of the votes. The MDM obtained 4.87 percent, Renamo 3.98 percent and Parena 3.46 percent.
