In the city of Beira, capital of Sofala province, in the early hours of Sunday morning (15-12), attackers intercepted the former president of the municipal assembly, Ricardo Lang, as he was about to return home.
“As I was getting into my car, about six men intercepted me. I realised that they were dragging me to their car. One of them took out a gun, and they started attacking me,” Land recounts.
Lang says that the next thing he knew was that he had been taken to a forest.
“They answered a call, where they were probably receiving instructions. Then they formed a circle, with me in the middle, and that’s when the ‘show’ of beatings began, very strong. After the attacks I fell unconscious,” he recalls.
The politician was rescued by locals who took him home. Lang says he has no doubt the attack had a “political hand” behind it, and accuses Frelimo
“The Frelimo party has its hands, and perhaps its entire body, in this. We have no other threat coming from Renamo, from Podemos or any other political force,” he states.
A month ago, the former president of the Municipal Assembly of Beira, a member of the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), was arrested by the police during a peaceful march by nurses.
When he was in office, Lang often defied the ruling party, Frelimo, over, for example, the execution of municipal plans.
The mayor of Beira, Albano Carige, visited the victim and argued that “what is happening is an attempt to intimidate Mozambicans and members of opposition parties”.
“The more repression, the more violence and barbaric killing ….the hatred of the people is only growing more and more,” Carige said.
