Former Mozambican president Armando Guebuza on Sunday joined Frelimo’s campaign for the October general elections, in a rare appearance at ruling party events of this kind.
In a meeting with business people in Maputo, Armando Guebuza, who led the Mozambican state from 2005 to 2015, called for votes for Daniel Chapo, the presidential candidate of the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo) in the general elections of October 9.
“We want the party to emerge victorious from these elections, because it will also be the victory of the people,” Guebuza emphasised.
On the ninth day of the campaign for the general elections, this was the first time that the former President of the Republic joined an action to mobilise the electorate in favour of Frelimo.
Despite being a member of the ruling party, Guebuza has been critical of his “comrades” for their alleged persecution of him and his family since the murder of his daughter, Valentina Guebuza, by her husband in 2016, and the sentencing of his eldest son, Ndambi Guebuza, to 12 years in prison in 2022 for his involvement in the “hidden debts” case.
Guebuza did not participate in any campaign action in 2019 for the re-election to office of his successor, Filipe Nyusi, the current president of Mozambique and of Frelimo.
The Mozambican presidential elections will take place simultaneously with the legislative elections, the elections for provincial governors and members of the provincial assemblies.
The current Mozambican president will not run again, having reached the constitutional limit of two terms.
