Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Libombos, Dom Dinis Sengulane, on Sunday give a talk on the importance of truth, beginning with a piece of advice.
“If you are a slave to the truth, you will be a completely free person,” he said. “As I would like to see you free at all times, in my capacity as a promoter of truth, I invite you to be a person of truth. In words, actions and attitudes, from childhood until beyond, when you enter the fullness of eternity.”
“Lack of truth is called a lie, falsehood or forgery, fraud, deceit and many other terms,” Dom Dinis explained.
For the former president of the Christian Council of Mozambique, all of the above-mentioned should be avoided, by everyone, whether children, teenagers, young people or adults. Dom Dinis warned that lies can come from all sides, even from religious leaders.
“The lie comes from the devil, even if it comes dressed in beautiful clothes, opulent clothes, sometimes even sacred clothes like mine, seeming to say things about God. But in the end it only leads to ruin.” Ruin into which some religious leaders lead even their own believers.
“There are religious leaders, several of whom who have lost their practice of doing the sacred things of God by connecting people to God, thereby causing many to lapse in their faith, or at the very least have weakened it, because they lacked the truth, either because they embraced the lie or because of their complicit silence,” Dom Dinis Sengulane said.
For the religious leader, choosing silence in situations where the truth should be told is tantamount to lying.
“Silence can be a lie when the truth is hidden, because to remain silent is to consent. Your lie, because it affects many people, because you are a person of influence, will without fail cause a lot of damage, not only in numerical terms, because many people can be affected, but also in terms of the depth of the impact. It can even put human lives at risk and can affect future generations.”
The bishop emeritus of the Diocese of Libombos went further and warned that lies can even cause states to fail.
“There are rulers, including heads of state worldwide, who have not only lost their reputation but also their office for failing to tell the truth and embracing lies. There are countries that have entered an embarrassing crisis, because their citizens succumbed to lies or because they did not defend and promote the truth, and the country fails. This is why it is said that corruption and indifference can make states fail,” he explained.
Dom Dinis ended the talk, given at the Parish of São João Evangelista, Belo Horizonte, Boane district, with a message of encouragement for everyone who wants to escape from lies.
“Because God is faithful to preserve His own, we can and must remain in the truth, whatever the pressure on us. Many people lie because they are pressured by others. Let us continue to persevere in the truth, because in it we find victory,” he concluded.
