The National Electoral Commission (CNE) of Mozambique gave a positive assessment yesterday regarding the opening of polling stations, despite confirming arrests and the fact that voting did not start in Berlin.
“In general, we assess the opening of the polling stations positively and [assert] that the process is proceeding in an orderly manner,” CNE spokesperson Paulo Cuinica told a press conference in a provisional assessment of the elections in Mozambique.
Regarding the opening of polling stations in the diaspora, Paulo Cuinica admitted “a delay” in the “arrival of material to Germany”, which “has not yet arrived in Berlin”, so “the polling stations have not yet opened”.
The same official confirmed an unspecified number of arrests for electoral irregularities, alongside “challenges” in the delivery of electoral material in the provinces of Zambézia and Gaza.
Cuinica also addressed complaints from candidates regarding changes in the order they were presented in the ballot papers, and concerning access by delegates to polling stations, all over the country.
Cuinica explained that “not all parties are running in all constituencies, whether nationally or abroad”, which is why they do not always appear in the same place on the ballot paper.
Regarding the issue of access by delegates to polling stations and possible irregularities in the delivery of their credentials, the spokesperson indicated that the CNE had held an extraordinary meeting regarding this and that teams were already on the ground.
The National Elections Commission (CNE) registered 17,163,686 voters for this election, including 333,839 who were to vote in seven African countries and two European countries.
