The president of Mozambique and the Frelimo ruling party, Filipe Nyusi, said on Friday at the organisation’s Central Committee meeting that the debate on the “process of choosing” the ruling party’s candidate “is a priority”, calling for discussions “without fear or reservation”.
“As we discuss the directive on the election of candidates for deputies in the Assembly of the Republic and members of provincial assemblies, it will be an important opportunity to assess the functioning of electoral offices at different levels, including the process of choosing Frelimo’s candidate for the elections on 9 October, as a priority,” said Nyusi.
The head of state and leader of the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frelimo) was speaking at the opening of the third session of the ruling party’s Central Committee, the highest deliberative body between congresses.
Filipe Nyusi said that the agenda for the meeting included the reports of the Political Commission, the verification committee, the Central Office for the Preparation of Local Elections (held in October 2023), a proposal for the party’s activity plan and budget for 2024, a proposal for the regulation of the statute and a proposal for a directive on the election of candidates for deputies to the Assembly of the Republic and members of the Provincial Assemblies.
The meeting will also examine the balance of the 2023 Economic and Social Plan and State Budget and information on the 2024 Economic and Social Plan and State Budget, among other topics.
The agenda for the third session of the Central Committee was voted by consensus by the body’s members.
Mozambique will hold its seventh presidential and legislative elections on 9 October, the second for provincial governors and the fourth for provincial assemblies.
Nyusi is constitutionally barred from running again for head of state because he is currently serving his second term as head of state, having been elected in 2015 and 2019.
