Speaking from the Frelimo party headquarters in Maputo last night, one hour after the announcement of the results of the general elections of October 9, Daniel Chapo did not ignore the scenario the country finds itself in, but argued that Mozambique would not develop through demonstrations, but through peace.
As he assured his “comrades”, Daniel Chapo wants to build a country for all Mozambicans, in which dialogue continues to be the basis for resolving conflicts. In his view, peace, tolerance, dialogue, the debate of ideas and inclusion should be the foundations of democratic coexistence.
For this reason, Chapo reiterated that the competent bodies should work to clarify the heinous crime that took the lives of lawyer Elvino Dias and national leader of Podemos, Paulo Guambe, so that those responsible can be held accountable for the crime.
In addition to reiterating his repudiation of last Friday’s double murder, Chapo expressed his solidarity with all citizens affected by the demonstrations on Monday and Thursday. “This is not the country we want for future generations. Frelimo is a party of peace, unity, harmony, and the defence of independence and territorial integrity. We will continue to defend these principles,” he promised.
Chapo committed to working for democratic pluralism, so that the debate of ideas can reign among Mozambicans.
Nevertheless, Daniel Chapo said that he had learned many lessons from the electoral process. Therefore, he promised that he would try to do what was best for the people, regardless of their origin, political affiliation, religion, skin colour, or anything else that might be different. “We will work for all Mozambicans, so that everyone can have the same opportunities”.
Addressing the President of Frelimo, Filipe Nyusi, the elected candidate said: “We have stayed [silent] this whole time, from the voting until the announcement of the results, not because we had nothing to say, but out of respect for the law and the institutions that deal with electoral matters. And because we must be consistent with our commitment to the truth, we have decided to be responsible. We promise that we will lead by example and respect the principle of the law.”
Chapo thanked Frelimo for the trust placed in him to lead the next cycle of governance. He thanked the members present at the party headquarters, the activists, the supporters and the population in general, from Rovuma to Maputo and abroad.
“You don’t win elections by being just a candidate. The one that wins elections is the Frelimo party machine; you don’t win elections by being a ‘One Man Show’,” Chapo said.
