The General Secretary of Mozambique’s ruling Frelimo Party, and its candidate in the forthcoming general election, Daniel Chapo, has guaranteed that any government he leads will work to stamp out definitively the islamist terrorism that has plagued parts of the northern province of Cabo Delgado since 2017.
Speaking on Thursday in the Cabo Delgado district of Chiure, Chapo said that ending the scourge of terrorism is crucial for developing the country. One of the key strategies, he said, will be “robust investment” in the Mozambican defence and security forces.
Chapo also promised a relentless battle against corruption – including against those corrupt individuals in the public administration who are hindering the country’s development.
Corruption, he said, is a heavy burden on the Mozambican people, expressed in a deterioration in their basic living conditions.
“As a result of corruption, we have schools and hospitals where building work has begun, but in the middle the work is paralysed because the money has been diverted, to satisfy the whims of individuals, to the detriment of the collective”, he said.
“We shall be implacable in fighting this evil”, he promised, “and the perpetrators shall be punished without mercy”.
Chapo also promised to computerize the entire public administration, in order to speed up procedures and ensure greater control.
During his tour of Cabo Delgado, Chapo promised “to change Mozambique with a different governance”.
“Our candidature is the candidature of change”, he declared, at an extraordinary meeting of the Frelimo Cabo Delgado provincial committee. “We are going to work to do new things, in a different way, so that we have different results”.
Next year will be the 50th anniversary of Mozambican independence, and throughout that period Frelimo has governed the country. “So Frelimo decided to choose a young man (Chapo is the first Frelimo leader born after independence), with a new vision, to change things, and change the way of doing things”.
