The Centre for Democracy and Human Rights (CDD) has condemned the “unacceptable interference” in the elections in Mozambique by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who met with Daniel Chapo, the Frelimo candidate.
“It is with great indignation that we strongly condemn the unacceptable interference by the President of the Republic of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, in publicly expressing his support for the Frelimo candidate, Daniel Chapo, in the midst of the electoral campaign for the elections in Mozambique, scheduled for next October 9”, says the non-governmental organization (NGO) in an open letter released yesterday.
The meeting between Chapo and Ramaphosa took place in Pretoria, South Africa. “A fruitful meeting aligned with our project of taking Mozambique forward”, described the Frelimo candidate on his Facebook page.
“The meeting held yesterday [Tuesday] in Pretoria between President Cyril Ramaphosa and the secretary-general of Frelimo, in which the ANC [African National Congress] pledged its support to Frelimo, constitutes a clear violation of the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states, enshrined in both SADC [Southern African Development Community] and the African Union,” criticizes the CDD.
For the NGO led by Adriano Nuvunga, the intervention of the South African President in favour of Daniel Chapo “represents a flagrant abuse of his position as head of state and leader of a dominant party in a neighbouring nation.”

“Such an attitude directly interferes with the democratic process in Mozambique, putting the legitimacy of the elections at risk and compromising the spirit of cooperation and neutrality that should prevail in bilateral and regional relations,” the CDD emphasizes.
The CDD calls on SADC and the African Union (AU) to “take a firm stance” on this case, to ensure that all political leaders respect the principles of non-interference and “promote an environment conducive to free and fair elections, free from external influence.”
On the behalf of the National Executive Committee of the ANC and the entire membership of our movement, we wish you, our Dear Brother and Comrade, Daniel Chapo, all the best in the upcoming elections for President.
