An angry CNE president also hit out at opposition parties making public claims based on “unchecked rumours and suspicions” which question the integrity of the entire electoral process. “Political parties need to be more responsible and serious. Rumours don’t help,” he said. Carimo was particularly annoyed at “recurring accusations that electoral management bodies at some point divert voting materials, in particular ballot papers or editais [results sheets].” Such accusations lead to violence and physical aggression, he said.
He also objected to complaints about the way containers of voting material are opened without the presence of party officials (as reported here yesterday). He noted that all voting materials are guarded by four locks, and a STAE official and three people named to STAE operations department by the three parties in parliament, Renamo, Frelimo, and MDM, all have to be present with their separate keys to unlock the warehouse. Party agents should not complain that they are not there because they have named people who are present and hold the keys.
