Seventy-three people are currently detained in the cities of Tete and Moatize following Monday’s demonstrations, called to protest against the results of the intermediate vote count of the October 9 elections.
The information was released on Monday evening by the spokesperson for the Provincial Command of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM), Feliciano da Câmara, who added that instruments used to build barricades on public roads were also seized.
He also reported that one residence was invaded, with the protesters damaging the back window of a vehicle parked in the yard in the Matundo neighbourhood.
Da Camara further clarified that a fire in the early hours of Monday in the Matundo neighbourhood, was not linked to the demonstration, but probably caused by a short circuit, resulting in three deaths.
He gave assurances that both cities were calm, but that the police remained positioned in strategic locations to ensure that people were able move freely on public roads.
