The governments of Egypt and Qatar on Thursday expressed their solidarity over the humanitarian crisis caused by armed violence in Cabo Delgado in northern Mozambique, a note from the Mozambican presidency advises.
“I would like to address my deepest condolences on behalf of the people and Government of Egypt, to the Government and people of the Republic of Mozambique, especially to the bereaved families of the perished, expressing Egypt’s condemnation of this unjustifiable act of cowardice and cruelty,” President of Egypt Abdel Fattah Al Sisi says in a message sent to the Mozambican head of state.
For Abdel Fattah Al Sisi, the fight against terrorism in Africa requires the involvement of the international community and Egypt is “committed” to working with the countries of the continent to curb the phenomenon.
“Egypt remains firmly committed to working closely with our African brothers and partners to purge terrorist elements from our continent,” Al Sisi adds.
According to a statement from the Mozambican Presidency, the deputy emir of the State of Qatar has also expressed solidarity with the humanitarian situation in Cabo Delgado.
“I want to address my sincere condolences and deep sympathy to your Excellency and through you, to the bereaved families of the victims who lost their lives in the deplorable and criminal beheadings in northern Mozambique,” Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Thani said.
Armed violence in Cabo Delgado has been going on for three years and is causing a humanitarian crisis with an estimated 2,000 deaths and around 500,000 people displaced, without adequate housing or food, mainly to the area around the provincial capital, Pemba.
