Mozambique Elections: MDM man shot by police in Gurue – CIP

Honordino Hilario was shot by a policeman yesterday at 17.30 in a village 13 km from Gurue. He is a leading figure in the MDM campaign. Clearly frightened, Hilario said the shooting was intentional and that he knew the policeman but would not give his name. He told the Bulletin that there is a group of armed civilians that is attacking “MDM agitators” and those who support them.

The Gurue MDM delegate, Inacio Rodrigues Nahara, said Hilario had spent the day mobilising many members at the local tea plantation, Unidade de Producao de Cha n.°1, and had not been in conflict with the police.

MDM has governed Gurue since it won in 2013 after the Constitutional Council forced a re-run of the election because members of the district and provincial elections commissions had falsified documents to give the victory to Frelimo. MDM’s victory was overwhelming and it remains popular.
