Mozambique’s Ministry of Education has a shortfall of 10,000 teachers out of a total of 12,000 new teachers that should have been hired this school year, which starts on 1 February, an official source said on Tuesday
“In terms of the targets given to us by the government, over the years we should hire a little more than 12,000 teachers per year and, therefore, at this point we can assume that we have a shortfall of 10,000 teachers who would, if we were able to hire them, stabilise the process,” Ministry of Education and Human Development (MINEDH) spokesperson Manuel Simbine told a press conference in Maputo.
According to Simbine, the Ministry of Education plans to hire only an extra 2,803 teachers for this school year to reinforce the approximately 170,000 active teachers, with priority being given to mathematics, chemistry and physics.
“We will [also] hire just over 10,000 literacy teachers to ensure [functioning of] the adult literacy system,” Simbine added.
According to MINEDH, ten new schools are also scheduled to open this year, with another 77 having been expanded with an increase in the number of classrooms in the provinces of Zambézia, Sofala and Tete, in the centre of the country, Cabo Delgado and Nampula in the north and Inhambane and Maputo in the south.
“With the expansion of these 77 schools, we will go from 564 classrooms to 969, which means we will gain another 405 classrooms,” said the same source.
The opening ceremony of the 2024 school year is scheduled for Wednesday, January 31 and will be held in Dondo district, Sofala province, central Mozambique.
