Mozambican police recently seized a combined 132 kilograms of heroin and methamphetamine in Nampula province’s Mossuril district in northern Mozambique, and arrested two men suspected of involvement in the case, a police source announced yesterday.
“This is a total of 132 kilos of drugs, 42 of which are heroin and 90 methamphetamine,” said Enina Tsinine, spokesperson for the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) in Nampula.
The drugs, hidden in bowls wrapped in plastic, were seized in two vehicles on 24 February, as a result of “operational work” carried out by SERNIC, which also culminated in the arrest, on 8 March, of two men suspected of involvement in drug trafficking.
Among the most notable drug seizures in 2024 was an operation that took place on June 28, when SERNIC detected 120 boxes of sweets containing cocaine originating in Brazil at Maputo International Airport.
The cities of Maputo (the capital, in the south), Beira, in the centre of the country, and Nampula, in the north, are identified as the main corridors of drug trafficking in Mozambique.
Mozambique is identified by several international organizations as a transit corridor for international drug trafficking bound for Europe and the United States, especially heroin from Asia, but seizures of cocaine from South America have also increased.
