Ports and Railways of Mozambique (CFM) is already selecting specialized consultancy services to materialize the doubling of the Movene-Ressano section of Maputo-Ressano Garcia railway line in Moamba.
The initiative seeks to respond to the growing demands on Mozambique’s rail-port system by the South African industrial sector, which uses the corridor for its exports.
In addition to duplicating the railway line, the project includes the expansion of the Ressano Garcia shipyard, work that will be paid for with financing the company secured from the French Development Agency.
The consultancy will include support for the management of the CFM project execution unit, coordination of the interface, technical and financial reports, awarding and selection of the company for the civil works.
The company to be contracted will also be required to support the management and auditing of the project account, preparation of disbursements, and management of environmental and social risks.
In September, CFM announced the completion of the first phase of the doubling of the Ressano Garcia line on the Maputo-Secongene section in Moamba, and the expansion of the passenger rail terminal at Central Station, Maputo.
Valued at over US$80 million, the first phase of the doubling of the line increased the cargo transport capacity from 13 million metric tons per year to 24 million.
Considering the southern railway system overall, which connects the Port of Maputo to South Africa, Zimbabwe and the Kingdom of Eswatini, the requalification of the Ressano line increased rail freight capacity to 33.0 million tons per year, equivalent to 100% of the cargo handled by the ports of Maputo and Matola last year.
Over the last five years, the company has invested more than US$600 million of its own funds in infrastructure, equipment and human resources, an effort that also includes the first phase of the doubling of the Ressano Garcia line.
