The leader of the Catholic Church in the city of Maputo has appealed to young people not to be deceived by terrorists’ false promises, destroying lives in exchange for “bloodstained” money.
Reacting to the attacks that have been taking place in the northern districts of Cabo Delgado province since 2017, and more recently in the town of Palma, the bishop called for a distancing from those allied with the terrorists, and for combating the group from all sides.
The Archbishop of Maputo, Dom Francisco Chimoio, who, for some years, also guided the Catholic church in Cabo Delgado, said that Mozambicans must show solidarity with one another, especially the young people in the northern region of the country, who must not allow themselves to be enticed into joining extremist groups.
“We need to encourage the youth not to be deceived by false promises; we must help these young people to escape these scenarios, which destroy human life and infrastructure,” Chimoio said. Young people must realize that they need to earn money fairly, not allying themselves with those who want to destroy the country.
Archbishop Chimoio said that weapons would not solve the country’s problems. Quite the contrary; they aggravate the situation, causing death, the destruction of infrastructure and displacement of people, as was happening now with the attacks in Palma.
“I appeal for calm and, above all, a search for understanding and for education, in the sense that they [the young] understand that life is not won through firearms. A healthy environment is created through understanding and solidarity with others,” the archbishop said.
The head of the Catholic Church in Maputo urges consensus on peace, openness and sincerity, and the necessity for the parties promoting armed violence speak to the government frankly.
