A few hundred Mozambican health professionals, led by doctors, are marching in Maputo today against the violence of recent days, reporting that at least 108 people have been shot, with 16 fatalities.
The initiative was initially scheduled only to gather in front of the headquarters of the medical association, but pressure from doctors resulted in a march that continued along Eduardo Mondlane Avenue, after passing by the emergency unit at Maputo Central Hospital.
The march is peaceful and non-partisan, say the doctors.
“Don’t kill our people,” the protesters demanded.

On October 24, Mozambique’s National Electoral Commission (CNE) attributed the victory in the October 9 presidential elections to Daniel Chapo, supported by the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo, the party in power since 1975), with 70.67% of the votes.
According to the CNE, Venâncio Mondlane came in second place, with 20.32%, but he does not recognise the results, which still have to be validated and proclaimed by the Constitutional Council.
In the general elections, Frelimo also strengthened its parliamentary majority, increasing from 184 to 195 deputies (out of 250), and securing all 10 provincial governorships in the country.
In chronological terms, following the announcement of the results by the CNE, the Constitutional Council gave that commission eight days on 30 October to send the minutes and notices of the vote in Maputo and in six provinces, in order to validate the election results of 9 October, which were contested by the opposition.
In addition to Mondlane, the president of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo, the current largest opposition party), Ossufo Momade, and one of the four presidential candidates, also said he did not recognise the election results announced by the CNE and called for the vote to be annulled.
Presidential candidate Lutero Simango, supported by the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), also rejected the results, saying they were “forged in the secretariat”, and promised “political and legal action” to restore the “will of the people”.
Venâncio Mondlane has called for strikes and protests for a period of one week, culminating in a national demonstration on 7 November in Maputo.
