The Mozambican government has launched a digital platform to train national tour operators in English, hoping to reach more than five million agents by 2030.
“We think that this platform, which is being developed in partnership with Clube MozaBanco and Perfectly Spoken, which is an English organisation, will help teach tour operators to express themselves fluently in English,” said Jorge Jairoce, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Economy, on the sidelines of the launch of the digital system in Maputo.
According to Jairoce, one of the advantages of the platform is its low cost, allowing people to join.
“We hope that by 2030 it can cover around five million tourist agents in Mozambique,” he explained.
Vaso Manhiça, president of Mozambique’s Tourism Federation, said at the time that the system was much more than a teaching platform, bringing “added value” to the tourism area: “Because tourism is a communication sector and knowing how to communicate is a critical success factor.”
The tourism sector has made a positive contribution to Mozambique’s economy, with an increase from 2.46% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2021 to 4.02% in 2023, according to government figures.
At the start of 2024, Mozambique saw a strong boost in tourism, with the inauguration of 66 new businesses, representing a growth of 57%, according to government figures.
In the first three months of last year, the country saw the opening of 66 new businesses in the catering and tourism sector, increasing the number of rooms on offer by 414.
During the same period, 559 new jobs were created in the sector, compared to 470 in the same period in 2023. Private investment in the sector more than tripled, reaching 1.3 billion meticais (€18.7 million) between January and March this year.
