Flávio Menete - head of the Mozambican lawyer's Bar Association (In file CoM)
The head of the Mozambican lawyer’s Bar Association (OAM) told Lusa on Friday the detention of Mozambique’s former finance minister in South Africa was an “embarrassment” for the country and an international response to the incapacity of Mozambique’s justice system.
Flávio Menete said the detention of Manuel Chang proved that the country could not resolve its own problems.
He added that the United States was defending its interests by requesting the extradition of Chang, taking into account that his charges are a crime under the laws of that country.
Chang was detained in South Africa on 29 December when he was trying to embark for Dubai following an extradition request issued by the American authorities connected to a $2 billion fraud scheme.
