Mozambique is among the 30 countries with the highest rates of tuberculosis infection, with 150,000 more cases detected in 2015. Tuberculosis is a global public health problem, killing more than 4,000 people a day worldwide in 2015.
According to data reported by O País, more than 900,000 cases are detected in Southern Africa every year. The disease is also a problem in Mozambique, which is on the list of 30 countries with high infection rates. Last year alone, more than 150,000 new cases were detected.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs yesterday launched an initiative to build an effective regional response to tuberculosis and other pulmonary diseases that will benefit people in Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia and Lesotho.
The program, run under the motto “United to end tuberculosis”, will run for five years and is supported by the World Bank and civil society health organisations in the beneficiary countries.
Miners and HIV/Aids patients are the most vulnerable. In 2015, of the 2.7 million cases reported, 760,000 were from the mining sector in Southern Africa.
