The Judicial Court of Machava in Maputo province this Wednesday handed five defendants convicted of the attempted murder of Momad Nini Satar (Nini Satar) to prison sentences ranging from four to seven years.
The crime occurred in the Maximum Security Penitentiary of Machava (the ‘B.O.’) in February of last year.
Nini Satar is imprisoned in the B.O. serving the remainder of a sentence for his involvement in the murder of Mozambique’s top investigative journalist, Carlos Cardoso, in November 2000.
Two Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) agents, José Ngulele and Edson Muianga, were sentenced to seven years in prison. Co-defendants Damião Mula and António Chicuamba were sentenced to four years in prison and Leão Wilson to five.
Judge Lucílio Nhanomber justified the sentences on it having been proven that the accused committed the crime of criminal association when they became involved in the attempted assassination of Nini Satar.
Judge Nhanomber acquitted defendants Leão Wilson, Damião Mula and António Chicuamba of a civil charge brought by the Public Prosecutor’s Office. José Ngulele and Edson Muianga were sentenced to pay a fine of 400,000 meticais to the state.
The lawyers for the defendants consider the sentences unfair and have not ruled out the possibility of appealing, said Alfredo Macitele and Celso Tuto.
The planned murder of Nini Satar originated when he was hospitalised in a Maputo clinic for Covid-19 infection, confirmed by the Judicial Court of Machava, in Matola, Maputo province.
Initially, the scheme involved the poisoning of the victim’s bath water, but this plan was later changed to the use of a bladed weapon.
