Jacinto Veloso, the head of the government delegation in the Joint Commission, said Wednesday in Maputo that the Defence and Security Forces would not be moving from their current positions.
In an interview with Radio Mozambique, Jacinto Veloso said that as soon as Renamo ceases its armed actions, the president, in his quality of Commander-in-Chief of the Defence and Security Forces, would order armed action against Renamo to stop.
Veloso was talking about a letter from the office of the Renamo leader sent to the president proposing the withdrawal of Defence and Security Forces stationed in Gorongosa, and went on to say that the letter had been answered.
“The answer is: The armed forces of Mozambique will not move from where they are. If there is a ceasefire, whether from armed Renamo or the government or the armed forces, they [the armed forces] will remain where they are – on condition, of course, that there is no more fire, no more shots,” Veloso said.
Yesterday, the head of Renamo delegation, Jose Manteigas, said that the Renamo leader was waiting for a response to the letter sent to the head of state.
“In relation to this, [we] say publicly that President Dhlakama has sent information that I cannot reveal here, because it is information for the head of state. So we are waiting for the president’s response and do not want to go into details because of course we are currently in negotiations.”
