The Mozambican government has activated the orange alert to allow assistance to flood victims during the rainy season until March 2019, the director general of the National Institute of Disaster Management (INGC) has announced.
“As the country is already at the peak of the rainy season and considering that situations that trigger monitoring and preventive intervention are beginning to occur, it is proposed to declare an orange alert in the country,” said Augusta Maíta.
The activation of the alert aims to expedite the mobilization of resources to assist the victims of floods and the restoration of damaged areas, she said.
The Mozambican government and partners have provided humanitarian assistance to some 330,000 people affected by food insecurity in November and December.
Between January and April, 2019, 418,000 people have been targeted for aid.
