Mozambique’s national beach soccer team debuted with a victory at the African Cup of Nations in Dakar, Senegal, beating Egypt 7-5 on Sunday afternoon.
The national team was strong throughout the three periods and, even though they faced some difficulties against the Egyptians, who are firm favourites to win the competition, they ended up taking the victory.
Nélson was top scorer in the national team, with four goals, while Rachid scored two and Fadil scored the seventh.
Mozambique thus made an auspicious start and leads its group, which includes Morocco and Seychelles, who also played this Sunday.
The Mozambican team will play its second round game, against the Seychelles, at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, and on Tuesday returns for the last group round match, playing Morocco, who are also fancied for the title.
Mozambique needs another win to reach the semi-finals on Friday (29-05).
The competition now involves only seven teams, after the withdrawal of the Central African Republic, which left Group A with only three teams – Senegal, Tanzania and Uganda.
