Corporate debt to the National Institute of Social Security has now reached a total of 2,397 million meticais [around US$42.9 million, at current exchange rates].
Of the total debt of companies to the INSS, about 32,631 thousand meticais corresponds to 223 cases awaiting trial in the Judicial Courts, about 331 million meticais corresponds to 874 cases pending in the Attorney General’s Office (PGR), and about 1,036 million corresponds to 2,328 cases outstanding in private tax foreclosure judgements.
According to Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Security Vitória Diogo, the total debt of 2.397 billion meticais has negative consequences for thousands of workers and their families who are deprived of their social security rights.
The minister also revealed that there were cases of companies running up debts without their knowledge.
To tackle this, Minister Diogo has urged employers to use electronic platforms to monitor the routing of monthly contributions, and exhortation extended to workers also, who can use the “My Contribution, My Benefit” platform to check whether their employer has paid its INSS contributions.
