President Nyusi met members of the Mozambican community in France on Sunday, and explained to them the main challenges facing Mozambique. He pointed out that 44 percent of Renamo’s former guerrillas have already been reintegrated, but said that the process would not be completed on time due to financial constraints.
On the day he landed in Paris, Filipe Nyusi met representatives of the Mozambican community living in France and outlined to “our compatriots” the state of play on the main challenges facing the country.
The highlight goes to the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration Process, which, according to the head of state, “we will not be able to (complete) by the established deadline, but we are encouraged, because 44% of the process of those who have to be reinstated is already complete”.
About 5,000 men have now undergone the process. The financial constraints in question result from the economic impact of Covid-19 on the countries that are financing the DDR.
“Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, their economies have regressed, and they have not had the strength to help. And not only [that], another problem has arisen, which is that of the displaced,” the head of state remarked.
President Nyusi nevertheless considers that the situation in the country is stable. “The three powers are functioning: the executive, the legislative and also the judiciary, despite the existence of conflict in localized areas,” he affirmed.
Regarding the search for effective peace, Filipe Nyusi said that the process continues in the light of the decentralization package, which dictated the election, for the first time, of provincial governors in Mozambique. The president assumes that decentralization will improve, not least because “it is a new experience”. “It is not an experience like so many countries that took years and years. We still do not have two years yet with this process, which means that much remains to be improved. We believe that only those who think things are absolute do not improve [them],” he noted.
Regarding terrorism, Nyusi reported that “the Defence and Security Forces are doing everything in their power to ensure the restoration of security”.
The highlight of the head of state’s visit to France is his participation in the summit on the financing of African economies seriously affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
